Took very few landscapes yesterday in the three mile perimeter walk around what was once a wet field diked in, now part of Alligator Lake Park. Years ago the Hills built a series of dikes along Alligator Lake, making fertile fields out of the lake bottom. How they were able, I suppose before the days of environmental concerns and permits. When the county purchased the property, they cut two holes in the dike and constructed a bridge over the opening, flooding again the field.
This view is from the Western side, looking East toward the parking lot, playground and pavilion.
A nice little park and the dikes are great for hiking and biking upon. So Hill had foresight we might say.

A very large domain and a life rooted in place and history. A fascination and the question: what would is a life like when it is ROOTED in ? Thank you, John.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reply. Replies are rare. Like roots, people hide their thoughts and comments. I feel quite uprooted even though I have lived here since 1979. I still do not feel it is home, that home is someplace else...like Sopchoppy,or Crawfordville, Monticello,Wilmore or Williston...I came to Lake City after graduating from college because my parents were here, my father being assigned to the church here. My real home where I had planned on returning to by now was Crawfordville, but my father sold the place and all was bulldozed down. So I call Lake City home, though it sure does not feel like home after thirty-four years.
